DEL RIO, Texas – The sight of thousands of migrants crossing the border in Del Rio and camping under the International Bridge has mobilized humanitarian efforts in Texas and in Mexico.
All of the food, water, supplies and personnel headed to the migrants underneath a International Bridge goes through a checkpoint at the border. It remains incredibly busy as the humanitarian effort continues.
These supplies were given to migrants in Acuña Mexico, delivered from Texas by members of the Israelite School of Universal Practical Knowledge, a nonprofit and alleged black supremacist group.
“The danger that they put themselves in with their children,” said Yatazaq Ban Yahwadah, who delivered aid to migrants in Mexico. “And to imagine that being me and my brothers and our family and our children is heart wrenching. What made us do it is that could be anyone of us.”
Many of these Haitian migrants say they left their island nation months or even years ago. They have been in other countries like Brazil, Chile and Honduras and speak fluent Spanish.
“We suffered a lot, but we have a lot of patience because there is no other opportunity,” said female migrant.
On the Texas side, nonprofits are working to bring more aid and supplies. Theova Milfort was born and raised in Haiti. He runs a nonprofit helping Haitians in his home country.
“What you have right now is the failure of the 20 years of the UN mission in Haiti led by the U.S.,” said Milfort.
